Candid Wedding Photographer in Italy, France and Europe
Some of the photographs we treasure most are the ones we never knew were being taken. A familiar expression, an unexpected embrace, friends laughing around a dinner table long after the speeches have ended. These are the moments that tend to stay with us, often more vividly than anything carefully arranged. I’m Gökhan Kutluer, a candid wedding photographer based in Rome, Italy, and available for weddings and elopements throughout Italy, France and the rest of Europe. My photography combines a documentary approach with an editorial sensibility, using both digital cameras and 35mm analogue film to tell the story of a wedding as naturally as possible.
I believe a wedding should be experienced rather than constantly interrupted for photographs. My role is to observe, anticipate and preserve what happens, while giving you the freedom to enjoy the day in your own way. If you’re looking for wedding photographs that feel personal, spontaneous and true to the people in them, we probably have something in common.
Candid Wedding Photography: The Beauty of an Unscripted Day
Every wedding has its own character. Some are intimate and understated, with only a handful of guests gathered around a table. Others are wonderfully chaotic, full of music, movement and people arriving from different corners of the world.
I enjoy photographing both, because what interests me most isn’t the scale of a celebration but the relationships between the people attending it.
Candid wedding photography is about recognising those connections without asking everyone to perform for the camera. It requires patience, curiosity and, perhaps most importantly, knowing when not to interfere.
There is a difference between documenting something and directing it. If someone is laughing, I don’t need to ask them to laugh again. If the atmosphere at a wedding reception is particularly beautiful, I would rather find a way to photograph it than rearrange the people who created it.
Of course, not every photograph needs to be spontaneous. A carefully composed portrait can be just as meaningful as an unplanned one. What matters to me is that the overall collection remains faithful to your personalities and the experience of being there.
An Editorial Eye with a Documentary Approach
I have always been interested in the relationship between photography, literature and cinema. Before becoming a wedding photographer, I was already writing, travelling and spending a great deal of time walking through cities with a camera. Those interests continue to influence my work. As a writer, I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of rhythm, atmosphere and the things that remain unsaid. A good story doesn’t need to explain everything. Sometimes a small detail can reveal more than an entire paragraph.
Photography works in a similar way. The French filmmaker Agnès Varda once said, “If you open people, you’ll find a landscape.” I find something particularly beautiful in that thought. Every person carries their own history, and sometimes the smallest gesture reveals a little of it. This is also why I enjoy bringing an editorial quality to candid wedding photography. I pay close attention to composition, colour, architecture and the relationship between people and their surroundings. However, I prefer to discover these elements within the events of the day rather than construct elaborate scenes.
The result is a combination of natural interactions and considered imagery: photographs that can feel cinematic without requiring the wedding itself to become a film set.
Natural Wedding Photography Without Uncomfortable Posing
One of the questions couples often ask me is whether they need to know how to pose. The answer is no. Most of the people I photograph aren’t professional models, and I certainly don’t expect them to behave like models on their wedding day.
During the ceremony, preparations, aperitivo, dinner and celebrations, I generally work without directing anyone. I move around, pay attention to what’s happening and photograph things as they develop. For couple portraits, I take a slightly different approach. I might suggest going for a short walk, finding a quieter corner of the venue or spending a few minutes together away from the guests. Occasionally, I’ll offer a little guidance with positioning or light, but I don’t work with a long list of poses.
I prefer conversations, movement and natural interaction. If something unexpected happens, that’s often where the most interesting photograph comes from. Family photographs are another exception. Those deserve some organisation, particularly when everyone needs to be in the same frame. I am happy to help arrange them efficiently so you can return to your guests without losing too much time.
Being a candid wedding photographer doesn’t mean refusing all direction. It means understanding when direction is useful and when it would only interrupt something better.
Digital and 35mm Film Wedding Photography
I work with both digital cameras and traditional 35mm analogue film, and couples can choose the combination that best suits their preferences.
Digital photography gives me flexibility, particularly in changing light, fast-moving situations and moments when there is little room for error. Film offers a different visual character, with its distinctive grain, colour and response to light.
I enjoy the discipline of analogue photography. Working with a limited number of exposures encourages careful observation and deliberate choices. Rather than photographing everything indiscriminately, I become more selective about what deserves a frame. At the same time, I don’t believe film automatically makes a photograph more emotional or meaningful. A photograph needs something interesting to say regardless of the camera used to make it.
For weddings, combining the two formats can work particularly well. Digital and film photographs sit alongside each other in the final gallery, offering slightly different interpretations of the same celebration. If analogue photography is particularly important to you, we can discuss how much film coverage you’d like before the wedding.

Candid Wedding Photography in Italy
Living in Rome has given me the opportunity to photograph weddings in many different parts of Italy. Although the country is often associated with grand architecture and spectacular landscapes, I find its smaller, everyday details just as appealing.
There is something wonderful about the contrast between an elegant wedding and ordinary life continuing around it. A couple walking through an old neighbourhood, guests gathering outside a church, or a wedding dinner unfolding beneath the trees of a countryside villa. I enjoy incorporating those surroundings into the photographs without allowing them to dominate the story.
In Rome, the city’s layered architecture and lively streets provide endless possibilities for urban weddings and intimate elopements. My approach is particularly suited to couples who want to experience the city rather than spend their entire wedding day moving between famous landmarks.
Tuscany offers a very different atmosphere, with countryside villas, vineyards, historic towns and celebrations that often revolve around long meals and time spent together. I particularly enjoy photographing the transition from the formal parts of a wedding to the more relaxed hours of the evening.
Further south, Sicily has its own character, shaped by the Mediterranean, its architecture and a remarkable variety of landscapes. I also photograph weddings around Lake Como, the Amalfi Coast, Venice, Florence and elsewhere in Italy.
Every region has a different visual language, and I prefer adapting to the atmosphere of a place rather than arriving with the same predetermined photographs in mind.

Candid Wedding Photographer in France
France has a particular appeal to me, not only as a photographer but also as someone interested in literature, cinema, architecture and the everyday life of cities. But there’s another, rather romantic reason why I spend so much time there: my partner lives in Paris! So these days, I divide my time between Rome and Paris, travelling back and forth quite frequently to spend time together. I suppose falling in love with someone who lives in another country has its logistical challenges, but it certainly gives me a lovely excuse to call two of Europe’s most beautiful cities home.
Paris, especially, rewards the kind of observation that has always been central to my photography. Beyond its familiar monuments, there are small streets, neighbourhood cafés, gardens and quiet corners where a wedding or elopement can become part of the city’s daily rhythm. For couples planning a wedding in Paris, I like the idea of creating photographs that feel connected to the city without relying entirely on its most recognisable locations.
However, my work in France isn’t limited to Paris. I’m also available for destination weddings and intimate celebrations in Provence, the Loire Valley, the French Riviera, Burgundy and other regions of France. Whether you’re planning a countryside wedding, a celebration at a château or a small ceremony followed by dinner with your closest friends, I can adapt my coverage to the occasion.

Available for Destination Weddings Across Europe
Although I divide my time between Italy and France, I regularly travel for photography and welcome enquiries from couples planning weddings elsewhere in Europe.
Having spent much of my life travelling and writing about places, I enjoy arriving somewhere new and discovering its particular character. I don’t necessarily look for the most famous viewpoint or the most impressive backdrop. Often, what interests me is how people interact with a place and how the setting becomes part of their experience.
This approach works well for destination weddings, where guests have often travelled considerable distances to be together. The wedding itself is important, of course, but so are the moments surrounding it: the anticipation of the first evening, the conversations between people who haven’t seen each other for years, and the celebrations that continue beyond the ceremony.
Depending on your plans, I can also photograph welcome drinks, rehearsal dinners and post-wedding gatherings, creating a more complete photographic record of your time together.

What Your Wedding Gallery Should Feel Like
When I think about a complete wedding gallery, I don’t think only about the most visually impressive individual photographs. I also consider how the images work together. A wide photograph can establish the atmosphere of a location, while a closer image can draw attention to a particular expression or interaction. A photograph of the dinner table may not immediately seem as important as one of the ceremony, but years later it might remind you of the atmosphere of an evening you wish you could experience again.
I want couples to recognise their wedding in the photographs, including the parts they might not have witnessed themselves. This means paying attention to guests, details, surroundings and the progression of the day, rather than concentrating exclusively on the couple.
I’m particularly fond of photographs that contain several things happening at once. Someone dancing in the foreground while two guests are talking in the background, for instance, or a quiet exchange taking place in the middle of a busy reception. These layered scenes often give a photograph a sense of life that cannot easily be planned.
A complete gallery should be enjoyable to look through as a collection, with a balance of portraits, atmosphere, intimate moments and the larger celebrations.
Is Candid Wedding Photography Right for You?
I think this approach works especially well for couples who don’t particularly enjoy being photographed, or who would rather spend most of their wedding day with the people they’ve invited.
Perhaps you’re planning a relaxed celebration without too many formalities. Maybe you’re interested in art, travel or cinema and would like your photographs to have a considered visual character without feeling overly styled. You might simply want someone who can photograph your wedding without constantly drawing attention to the camera.
That doesn’t mean the wedding has to be informal. I’ve photographed elegant celebrations where everything was carefully planned, and intimate ceremonies where very little followed a fixed schedule. The important thing is finding a photographic approach that feels comfortable and appropriate for the people involved. I generally work best with couples who trust me to observe the day in my own way while remaining attentive to the moments that matter to them.
Frequently Asked Questions About Candid Wedding Photography
What is candid wedding photography?
Candid wedding photography focuses on photographing natural, unposed moments as they happen. Instead of directing every interaction, the photographer observes the wedding and responds to the people, light and events unfolding throughout the day. The aim is to create images that preserve genuine expressions, relationships and atmosphere.
Is candid wedding photography the same as documentary wedding photography?
The two approaches are closely related. Candid photography usually refers to individual photographs made without posing or directing the subject, while documentary wedding photography describes a broader approach to telling the story of an entire wedding through observation. My work incorporates both, alongside elements of editorial photography.
You can read more about my documentary wedding photography approach.
Will you still take family photographs and couple portraits?
Absolutely. I believe family portraits deserve a place in a wedding gallery, and I’m happy to organise them with you. For couple portraits, I generally prefer gentle guidance, movement and natural interaction rather than elaborate poses. We can plan a little time for these photographs without allowing them to take over the day.
Do you photograph weddings on 35mm film?
Yes. I offer digital photography as well as packages combining digital and 35mm analogue film. Film development and high-resolution scanning are included when film photography is part of the agreed coverage.
Can we book you for a wedding outside Italy and France?
Yes. I divide my time between Rome and Paris but available for weddings throughout Italy, France and elsewhere in Europe. I regularly travel for photography and can provide a quotation that takes travel and accommodation requirements into account.
Do you photograph small weddings and elopements?
Yes. I photograph everything from intimate elopements and micro weddings to full-day celebrations with larger guest lists. The amount of coverage can be adapted to your plans, and we can discuss whether having a second photographer would be useful for your wedding.
How do we book you as our wedding photographer?
You can contact me with your wedding date, location and an approximate idea of your plans. I’ll confirm my availability and send you the relevant photography options. Once we’ve agreed on the details, I’ll prepare a contract. The date is reserved after the contract is signed and the 50% booking deposit has been received.
Let's Tell Your Story
If you’ve made it this far, I hope you have a better understanding of how I see weddings and the photographs I enjoy making.
I’m interested in celebrations that reflect the people organising them, whether that means an intimate ceremony in Paris, a long summer evening in Tuscany, a wedding by the sea in Sicily or a gathering somewhere else in Europe.
You don’t need to prepare a complicated shot list or know exactly how you want every photograph to look. We can discuss the important parts of your plans beforehand, leaving enough space for everything that happens naturally along the way.
If you’re looking for a candid wedding photographer in Italy, France or elsewhere in Europe, I’d be happy to hear about your wedding and see what we can create together.

Gökhan is one of those rare people who are truly doing what they were meant to do. He is an incredible photographer. Gökhan is a very talented, artistic and an incredibly nice person. What sets him apart from others is his ability to capture people as they are. The photos are beautiful, but above all, they feel authentic. Thank you so much for the wonderful afternoon! Drinking Aperol and wandering around a medieval city felt like spending time with a friend!

We had so much fun, and we are so in love with these photos that we will cherish forever!”
We had an incredible experience with Gökhan. His film photography brought a timeless, romantic feel to our couple’s photoshoot. Every shot beautifully captured our emotions, with soft tones and a nostalgic quality that digital just can’t replicate. The entire session felt natural and relaxed.
From the very start, he made us feel completely at ease — like we were simply enjoying a romantic stroll through the city rather than posing for a photoshoot. His warm personality and artistic eye turned the entire experience into something truly special — more like a genuine date with a photographer than a formal session.

Gökhan immediately makes you feel welcomed and at ease. He is very knowledgeable, a meticulous professional with the fine details to ensure he gets the best shots possible, passionate about what he does and his open and joyful spirit makes shooting with him a pleasant and heartwarming experience.
