Destination Wedding Photographer in Europe: Candid Wedding Photography on Digital and 35mm Film

If you are planning a destination wedding in Europe, you probably chose the place for a reason. Maybe it is somewhere you already love. Maybe your families are travelling from different parts of the world. Maybe you found a villa in the Italian countryside, a small château in France, an old house by the Mediterranean, or a city where you simply want everyone you love to spend a few unforgettable days together. Whatever brought you there, I don’t think your wedding should become a production for the camera. I am Gökhan Kutluer, a destination wedding photographer based in Rome and available for weddings across Europe. I photograph weddings using digital cameras, 35mm film and medium format film, with a candid and documentary approach centred around people, atmosphere and everything that happens naturally around you.

My job is not to constantly arrange your wedding for photographs. My job is to notice it.

Wedding Photography That Lets You Stay Inside Your Wedding

I photograph weddings for couples who want to experience their day rather than spend it performing for photographs. That means I am looking not only at the ceremony, the portraits and the beautifully arranged tables, but also at what is happening around them.

Your friends laughing before dinner. Someone nervously fixing a button five minutes before the ceremony. Your parents watching you from the other side of the room. A glass being raised unexpectedly during a speech. A hug that lasts longer than you thought it would. The slightly chaotic part of the evening when everyone has forgotten there is a photographer in the room. Those are often the photographs that become more valuable with time. I will guide you when guidance is useful, especially during couple portraits, family photographs or when we find extraordinary light. But I do not want photography to constantly interrupt the rhythm of your wedding.

You enjoy the wedding. I pay attention.

A Wedding Photographer Based in Italy, Available Across Europe

Rome is home, but travelling has always been a fundamental part of the way I see the world and the way I photograph it. Europe is incredibly diverse within relatively short distances. A wedding in Sicily does not feel like a wedding in Paris. Tuscany has a completely different rhythm from the Mediterranean coast. A celebration in an old European city asks for a different kind of attention than a weekend surrounded by mountains, vineyards or sea. I like that.

I do not want every wedding to look as though it happened in the same place. Being based in Italy also makes travelling for European destination weddings relatively simple. I am available for weddings and intimate celebrations throughout Europe, including France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia and beyond. If you have chosen somewhere I have never photographed before, that does not worry me. Quite the opposite. I enjoy arriving somewhere with curiosity and discovering how the place moves, where the light falls and how your people inhabit it.

Documentary by Instinct, Editorial When It Helps

You may see words such as documentary, candid, editorial, cinematic and photojournalistic used frequently to describe wedding photography. My approach sits somewhere between several of them.

Most of the day is documentary. I observe, anticipate and photograph what is actually happening. I do not recreate emotional moments after they happen. I do not ask you to repeat a laugh. I do not want everyone looking towards the camera whenever something beautiful occurs.

At the same time, documentary photography does not mean being passive. When we have ten minutes of extraordinary evening light, I may take you somewhere nearby. If a room is visually interesting, I may suggest where you stand. If family photographs need organising, I will organise them. If you feel uncomfortable in front of the camera, I will help without making the photographs feel overly directed.

The goal is a gallery that contains both things: beautifully composed photographs and the strange, funny, emotional, imperfect moments that made the wedding yours.

Digital and 35mm Film Wedding Photography in Europe

I photograph weddings digitally and on analogue film.

Digital photography gives me speed, flexibility and reliability throughout an unpredictable wedding day. Film changes the rhythm. With 35mm and medium format cameras, every frame becomes slightly more intentional. Film has its own relationship with colour, grain, movement and light. There is also something beautifully imperfect about it that suits weddings particularly well. I do not use film simply as a filter or aesthetic trend. I shoot actual analogue film alongside my digital cameras.

Depending on the coverage you choose, your final wedding gallery can combine both formats into one story. Some moments work beautifully on film. Some demand digital. I use whichever camera makes sense for what is happening in front of me. If analogue photography is particularly important to you, tell me when you enquire and we can shape the coverage around it.

Destination Weddings Without Turning the Day Into a Photoshoot

One of the strange things about destination weddings is how much work can go into creating something that should ultimately feel effortless.

People travel. Families arrive from different countries. There may be several languages around one table. Plans change. Someone gets lost. Dinner takes longer than expected. The weather decides to become part of the story. I expect all of that. Photography should not become another source of pressure.

Before the wedding, we talk about the structure of the day, the people who matter to you, any photographs that are particularly important and anything you would rather avoid. Then, on the wedding day, you should be able to stop thinking about photography.

I adapt to what happens.

Weddings Across Europe

I am available for destination weddings, intimate weddings, elopements and multi day celebrations throughout Europe. Italy remains one of the places where I photograph most frequently, from Rome, Tuscany and Sicily to Lake Como, Puglia, Venice and the Amalfi Coast. I also travel outside Italy for European weddings and photography assignments.

France is particularly close to my heart, including Paris and the countryside beyond it. I am also available for weddings in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia and elsewhere in Europe. The location matters, but I do not think it should become more important than the people. A beautiful château is still just a building until your friends are dancing inside it. A spectacular landscape becomes meaningful because of what happened there. That is what I want the photographs to remember.

For Couples Planning Their European Wedding From Abroad

Many destination weddings in Europe are organised from another country. You may be planning everything from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia or somewhere completely different while communicating with venues, planners and suppliers across several time zones. The photography part should be easy.

We can initially talk by video call and go through the structure of the wedding, your priorities and the atmosphere you want. You do not need to send me an enormous Pinterest board or prepare a list of poses. It is much more useful for me to understand who you are, who will be there, what matters to you and what kind of wedding you are actually trying to create. From there, I can photograph it in a way that feels like you.

More Than One Day?

Absolutely. European destination weddings often become wedding weekends rather than single events. If your guests have travelled a long distance, you might have a welcome dinner the evening before, the wedding itself, and something relaxed the following day.

I can photograph one part or build coverage around the entire celebration. The welcome dinner can be particularly beautiful photographically because people are seeing each other for the first time, the atmosphere is usually less formal and nobody is thinking very much about the camera yet. By the time the wedding starts, I also already know many of the faces around me.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you travel anywhere in Europe for weddings?

Yes. I am based in Rome and available for destination weddings throughout Europe depending on my calendar and travel logistics.

Are travel costs included?

Travel requirements depend on the destination and the duration of the wedding. Once I know the location, date and approximate coverage you need, I can give you a clear quote including the necessary travel arrangements.

Do you photograph weddings on film?

Yes. I offer wedding photography using digital cameras together with 35mm and medium format film. If film is particularly important to you, mention it when you enquire.

Do you photograph only large weddings?

No. I photograph full wedding days as well as intimate weddings and elopements. The coverage can be shaped around the size and structure of your celebration.

Can you photograph a wedding weekend?

Yes. Welcome dinners, wedding days and other parts of a multi day celebration can be included in a custom package.

We hate posing. Is that a problem?

Not at all.

Most people I photograph are not models and do not particularly enjoy posing. You do not need to know what to do in front of the camera.

I will give you direction when it helps, but for most of the wedding I want you to pay attention to each other and to the people you invited, not to me.

How far in advance should we contact you?

As soon as you have your date and location, especially for weekends during the main European wedding season.

You do not need to have every detail organised before getting in touch.

Tell Me About Your Wedding in Europe

Tell me where you are getting married, when it is happening and a little about what you have planned.

You can also tell me something completely unrelated to logistics.

What made you choose this particular place?

What are you excited about?

What do you absolutely not want your wedding photographs to feel like?

Those things often tell me much more than a traditional photography checklist.

I personally read every enquiry.
