Japanese Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Rome: Kanaka and Sakitu

Kanaka and Sakitu travelled from Tokyo to Rome for their pre wedding photoshoot. They had contacted me many months before the trip, and from the beginning I could feel how excited they were about the idea. They are both huge admirers of Italy and Rome, and they wanted their photographs to feel connected to the city rather than simply using Rome as a background. They were also very precise about what they liked and the atmosphere they wanted. At the same time, they gave me complete freedom to photograph them in my own way. That combination made the whole session feel like teamwork.

A Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Rome That Felt Natural

When couples travel to Rome for pre wedding photography, it can be tempting to create a strict list of locations and move from landmark to landmark. That was not how Kanaka and Sakitu’s session developed. We walked. We stopped for coffee. Later, we had an Aperol Spritz. Sometimes we photographed intensively, and sometimes we simply slowed down and talked. It was summer in Rome, so there were also moments when they needed a little fresh air and a break from the heat. Those pauses ended up becoming part of the experience too. For me, this is what a pre wedding photoshoot in Rome should feel like. It should leave space for photographs, but also leave space for the couple to actually experience the city together.

From Tokyo to Rome

One thing Kanaka and Sakitu told me early in the session was that they were a little shy about showing affection in public. They explained that in Japan, openly kissing or being very intimate in the street is not as common or culturally natural as it can be in Italy. At first, I could feel that hesitation. They were happy and playful, but still a little aware of the people around them. So I did not push them. We kept walking, talking and photographing naturally.

After around half an hour, they became much more relaxed. And something interesting happened. They started noticing the reactions of Italians around them. There were smiles, little comments, curiosity and warmth. Public affection is much more normal in Italy, and instead of making Kanaka and Sakitu uncomfortable, those reactions actually helped them enjoy the experience more. From that point, the photographs became increasingly playful.

A Mix of Editorial and Candid Photography

What I like most about this gallery is the contrast. Some photographs feel elegant and deliberate. Kanaka in her white dress and sunglasses. Sakitu in his black suit. Old Roman walls, large wooden doors and carefully framed portraits. Other photographs are almost the opposite. Walking. Laughing. Moving through the streets. Taking a drink. Fixing lipstick. Sharing small moments that were never planned. That balance is important to me. I do not want a pre wedding photoshoot to feel completely posed. But I also do not think everything needs to be purely documentary. Sometimes a couple wants to look elegant. Sometimes they want to feel like they are inside a fashion editorial. And ten seconds later, something funny happens and the photograph becomes completely spontaneous. That combination is where I feel most comfortable as a photographer.

Photographing Rome Without Making It a Checklist

Rome is an extraordinary place for pre wedding photography because it gives you so many different visual environments within a relatively small area. Historic streets. Stone architecture. Old doors. Cafés. Gardens. Open spaces. But I do not like treating the city as a checklist. I do not think every couple needs exactly the same photograph at exactly the same landmark.

With Kanaka and Sakitu, Rome became part of the story in a more natural way. Sometimes the city is clearly visible. Sometimes it appears simply as a wall, a cobblestone street or a piece of light. Later, we moved toward the greener atmosphere of Villa Borghese. The mood changed completely. The city became quieter. The light became softer. The white parasol they had brought started appearing more in the photographs, and the second part of the session felt almost like a different chapter.

Why Rome Works So Well for Pre Wedding Photography

For international couples, Rome offers something beyond famous architecture. It offers movement and unpredictability. A street you did not expect to photograph. A café that suddenly feels perfect. A passerby reacting to the couple. Light changing between buildings. A quiet moment that happens while everyone else is moving around you. Of course, planning matters. The time of day matters. The season matters. Crowds matter. Walking distances matter. But I prefer to plan enough to create opportunities rather than planning every photograph before the session begins.

Kanaka and Sakitu had strong ideas, beautiful styling and a clear vision. But some of my favourite photographs from their Rome pre wedding photoshoot happened in moments none of us could have predicted.

A Japanese Couple Experiencing Rome Through Photography

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing international couples in Rome is seeing the city through their reactions. Kanaka and Sakitu came from Tokyo already loving Italy. But being here, dressed for their pre wedding photos and moving through the streets together, gave them a different experience of the city. Their initial shyness became part of the story. Their reaction to Italian openness became part of the story. The coffee, the Aperol, the summer heat and the little breaks all became part of the story. That is why I prefer not to repeat the same route for every couple. Rome can stay the same. The photographs should change depending on the people in front of the camera.

Planning Your Own Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Rome

If you are planning a pre wedding photoshoot in Rome, I would start by thinking about how you want the session to feel rather than choosing ten locations.

Maybe you want something elegant and editorial.

Maybe you prefer mostly candid photographs.

Maybe you want to walk, stop for coffee and let the session develop naturally.

Maybe you love historic Rome.

Maybe you prefer quieter streets and gardens.

Once I know something about the couple, it becomes much easier to create a session that feels personal. Kanaka and Sakitu came from Tokyo because Italy and Rome meant something to them. The goal was never simply to prove that they had been photographed in Rome. It was to create photographs that would remind them what it felt like to be here together.

"We had such beautiful photos taken by Gökhan. He has so much experience and knowledge of both photography and locations that you can comfortably leave everything in his hands. At the same time, if there is something specific you would like to do, he is very flexible and will incorporate your ideas into the plan. We were able to discuss everything beforehand through an online meeting and messages, so even if you are not very confident speaking English, you can feel comfortable and prepared for the day. He photographed us in a way that made us, as a Japanese couple, feel completely natural within the streets of Rome, while still creating something dreamy and atmospheric. The final photographs were even better than we expected. Most importantly, the time we spent taking photos went by so quickly because we had such a fun experience. We are really happy that we chose Gökhan."
