Candid Wedding Photography in Rome: Hande and Matteo at Relais Villa Lina
Some weddings feel alive from the very beginning. Hande and Matteo’s wedding at Relais Villa Lina, just outside Rome, was exactly like that: full of movement, laughter, tenderness, and the kind of spontaneous moments that make candid wedding photography so meaningful. They live in Paris, but their wedding in Italy brought together guests from different parts of Europe, creating a truly international celebration. Different languages, different cultures, old friends, family, and a lot of people who seemed very ready to enjoy themselves properly. As a wedding photographer in Rome, these are the kinds of days I love documenting most: natural, unposed, full of character, and never too polished to feel real.
Natural and Unposed Wedding Photography in Rome
I was there for the full wedding day, from the very beginning until late into the night. That gave me the chance to witness every phase of the celebration. The quiet preparation moments, the little tension before the ceremony, the emotion of the vows, the sudden joy after the kiss, the dinner, the cake, and then the moment when everyone completely let go on the dance floor.
During the bride’s preparation, we had a small 15-minute window to create some bridal boudoir portraits. Then I moved to the groom’s room, where Matteo was getting ready with his fellas, a part of the day I had already shared in a previous analogue wedding photography post from this celebration.
The ceremony itself had one of the sweetest details I have ever photographed. After Hande and Matteo read their vows to each other, the rings were passed through the hands of all their guests before finally reaching the couple around the neck of their dog. It was emotional, funny, and completely them.
There are many little fragments from this wedding that stayed with me. The mothers dancing together. Hande and Matteo running through the garden. The group photo that quickly became something much wilder and more alive. The groom tasting the wedding cake from the bride’s skin. The kind of moments you cannot really direct, and honestly, should not direct.
This is why I love documentary and candid wedding photography in Italy. A wedding does not need to look perfect in every second to be beautiful. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs come from movement, chaos, strange gestures, loud laughter, and people forgetting there is a camera around.
Hande and Matteo’s wedding at Relais Villa Lina was a full day of exactly that. A natural, unposed, joyful wedding near Rome, photographed on both digital and 35mm film, with all the imperfections and energy that make a celebration feel truly human.
Wedding Photography on Digital and Film
Some couples ask me to photograph their wedding entirely on film, while others prefer digital, and most choose a mix of both, just like Hande and Matteo. Film captures atmosphere and emotion in a way that feels timeless, while digital allows for flexibility and immediacy. Whichever format you prefer, the focus remains the same: your story, the connection between you, and the spirit of the place.
