A Slow Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Rome with Vivian and Hamish

When Vivian and Hamish came from New Zealand to Rome for their pre wedding photoshoot, I immediately felt that we shared a similar way of experiencing cities. They were not interested in rushing through Rome with a checklist of famous locations. They wanted to enjoy the city slowly. To walk, talk, stop for gelato, notice beautiful light, and experience Rome naturally while creating photographs along the way. That is exactly how I approach pre wedding photography in Rome.

Pre Wedding Photography in Rome Beyond Posed Photos

I always tell couples that my pre wedding photoshoots are not only about photos.

Of course, creating beautiful images matters. But the experience itself matters just as much.

Rome is not a city that should be rushed through. The best moments often happen between locations. Walking through quiet streets early in the morning. Discovering a beautiful corner with soft light. Sitting on the Spanish Steps for a few minutes without speaking. Sharing gelato while wandering through Trastevere or Monti.

Vivian and Hamish embraced this atmosphere completely.

Their session felt less like a traditional photoshoot and more like spending a slow afternoon in Rome together.

Planning a Pre Wedding Photoshoot in Rome

Vivian was definitely the organizer of the two and I say this in the best possible way.

Weeks before the shoot, she already sent me photos of her dress so we could think together about colors, textures, neighborhoods, and the overall atmosphere we wanted to create.

This is something I always encourage couples to do before their pre wedding photoshoot in Rome.

Sharing outfit ideas, moodboards, films, cafés, books, or even a street you discovered online helps create a session that feels personal rather than generic.

Rome offers endless possibilities for pre wedding photography, but the goal is never simply moving from monument to monument. The goal is creating photographs that feel connected to your experience in the city.

For Vivian and Hamish, we focused on locations that allowed movement, atmosphere, and quiet moments.

Some of the places we explored included:

Spanish Steps

The Spanish Steps are iconic for a reason. Early in the morning, the light becomes soft and cinematic. The stairs, flowers, and architecture create a timeless atmosphere for editorial and documentary style photographs.

Streets Near the Colosseum

Instead of photographing only directly in front of the Colosseum, we wandered through the surrounding streets where Rome feels more alive and intimate. Small moments often work better than postcard views.

Quiet Roman Streets

Some of my favorite photographs from this session happened in streets with no famous landmarks at all. Just beautiful light, old walls, shadows, and movement.

A Relaxed and Cinematic Approach to Couple Photography

Many couples tell me they feel nervous about being photographed.

That is completely normal.

Most people are not professional models and they should not feel like they need to perform during their pre wedding session.

This is why I prefer a slower and more documentary approach.

We walk. We talk. We stop for coffee or gelato. Sometimes we simply sit somewhere quietly for a few minutes. During that process, natural moments begin to appear on their own.

Vivian and Hamish understood this immediately.

Some of the strongest photographs from their session happened while they were laughing between locations, dancing in the street, or simply enjoying the city together.

What to Wear for a Pre Wedding Photoshoot

Vivian chose a modern white dress that worked beautifully with the textures and architecture of Rome.

For couples planning a pre wedding photoshoot in Rome, I usually recommend outfits that feel elegant but comfortable enough for walking through the city.

Neutral colors, linen fabrics, soft whites, beige tones, and timeless pieces tend to work very well with Rome’s warm textures and historic streets.

Comfort also matters more than people think.

Rome is a city best experienced on foot.

Why Couples Choose Rome for a Pre Wedding Photoshoot

Rome has a unique rhythm that works perfectly for couple photography.

The city can feel grand and cinematic one moment, then intimate and quiet the next. You can turn a corner and suddenly find soft light falling onto an empty street that feels completely disconnected from the crowds nearby.

For couples visiting Italy, a pre wedding photoshoot in Rome becomes more than a gallery of photographs.

It becomes part of the memory of the trip itself.

"From the very first message to the end of the photoshoot, Gökhan was incredibly helpful and professional. You can immediately tell how passionate he is about photography. He really listens to what you want and is always open to communication, whether it’s about outfits, locations, or the overall style of the shoot. He was also like a wonderful tour guide during the session. I mentioned that I love Audrey Hepburn, and he even changed the location to create the perfect Roman Holiday atmosphere for us. His eye for light and shadow is amazing, which you can clearly see from his Instagram and, of course, in the final photos. Many beautiful shots were taken naturally while we wandered around Rome and ate gelato, and the whole experience felt relaxed, fun, and memorable. We are so happy we found him for our pre-wedding photoshoot in Rome. Highly recommended!"
