An Unconventional Story by a Destination Wedding Photographer in Rome: Julianna and Cameron

When Julianna and Cameron first reached out, I felt an immediate connection to their vision. They were not looking for the Rome you see in glossy travel magazines. They wanted the Rome I know. This is the city of narrow alleys, the smell of old books in a basement pub, and the vibrant energy of a night that refuses to end. Julianna and Cameron were a really kind couple who came all the way from the United States with their guests to celebrate in this ancient city. As a destination wedding photographer in Rome, I have learned that the most beautiful moments are not the ones we plan for minutes on end. They are the ones we happen upon when we slow down enough to let the city speak to us. Julianna and Cameron did not want a luxury production. They wanted a day that felt like an honest reflection of their lives.

Emotional Vows at Vivi Bistrot in Piazza Navona

The heart of the day began at Vivi Bistrot which is tucked away in the iconic Piazza Navona. This was not a cold or formal ceremony. It was a space filled with warmth and genuine emotion. I focused on the serious moments during the vows where the weight of the promise they were making felt visible in the air. There is a specific kind of beauty in the quiet intensity of a wedding ceremony. I watched the way their hands held tight and how their friends watched with tears in their eyes. After the ceremony, they walked out into the historic square as husband and wife. The guests threw rice while the tourists and locals stopped to watch. It was a moment of pure and unscripted joy right in the center of the Eternal City.

Blending Digital Precision with an Analog Soul

Julianna has a deep appreciation for the warmth of film. While the majority of our day was captured digitally, I wanted to ensure the feeling remained consistent. To capture the soul of the day on film, I used two of my favorite tools: the Contax G2 and the Yashica T4. These cameras allow for a specific kind of spontaneity that perfectly matches a city wedding. To me, photography is not about technical perfection. It is about how a memory feels. For the daylight hours, the analogue frames allowed us to capture the quiet anticipation of the morning. As the sun dipped below the Tiber and we moved into the late night celebrations, digital became our primary tool. I treated these digital frames with what I call an analog soul by adding grain, softening the colors, and using a direct flash to mirror that raw, nostalgic feeling of a snapshot. It is about maintaining a consistent rhythm throughout the story regardless of whether I am shooting 35mm or a digital sensor.

From Piazza Navona to Tiramisu in the Street

After the ceremony, the magic happened in the transitions. There is something deeply human about a wedding party navigating the Roman crowds on foot. My style is about catching the life that happens between the big events. One of my favorite moments was when we stopped at Two Sizes nearby. Julianna and Cameron stood in the queue with everyone else. There was no pretense or rush. They waited for their tiramisu and then ate it with pure joy right there in the street while surrounded by the city evening hum. These are the moments that truly tell the story of a destination wedding. These are the messy, sweet, and unscripted parts of being alive in Rome.

The Underground Pub and the Art of the Spontaneous

We ended up at Altroquando, which is a legendary bookstore and underground pub. I am not a traditional wedding photographer. I do not want to document a curated fantasy. I want to document Julianna pouring a beer behind the bar and the laughter echoing off the stone walls of a Roman cellar. My approach is candid and focused on the mood. Whether it is a serious moment during the ceremony or the chaotic fun of an entrance into a basement bar, I search for the heartbeat of the event. I want you to look back at your photos and remember how the air felt instead of just how you looked.

Posing for the Non-Posers

Julianna and Cameron mentioned they were not natural posers. Most of us are not. My role is to offer gentle artistic direction to find the right light in a dark alley or the right angle at a pub table so you can simply be. It creates a space where you feel comfortable enough to let your guard down.

The Party at Ripa Grande: Energy Until Dawn

By the time we reached Ripa Grande for the reception the wedding had shed any remaining formality. We gathered for a beautiful sit down dinner that felt more like a large family reunion than a formal event. Julianna’s father was such a fun person who brought a wonderful energy to the whole evening. He made so many jokes during his speech that everyone in the room was laughing including me and my assistant. After the dinner concluded the DJ started the music and the transition to the dance floor was seamless. The party went until 2:00 AM. The night culminated in a big group photo on the dance floor. It was a chaotic and wonderful mess of 50 people who had traveled across the ocean to celebrate. This is why I do what I do. I catch the mood, the fun, and the genuine pulse of the day as it unfolds naturally.

Finding Your Own Rhythm in Rome

If you are planning an unconventional wedding in Rome and you find yourself leaning away from the traditional and toward the authentic, I would love to hear from you. My style is candid and focused on the story. It is rooted in the belief that the best photos happen when you are simply living your day. This includes the tiramisu, the beer, and everything in between.

"Gökhan was our dream wedding photographer in Rome! We were looking for someone who understood our vision, was open to going in an unconventional direction, and just took beautiful, artistic photographs. Not only is he talented but he is also just a pleasure to work with. I found him to be extremely sweet, calm, supportive and grounding the day of the wedding. Several of our guests commented afterwards on how wonderful our wedding photographer seemed! I highly recommend him if you are looking for beautiful photos to cherish forever on your wedding day."
